How to Convert an Image to a Different Format on Your Mac

Tuesday, January 25, 2022

Sometimes we need an image to be in a specific format or size, either for submission to an online site or form or to order prints of a photo, or for many other reasons.

Convert Image is a new pre-installed Quick Action in your Mac’s Finder that can quickly convert an image file from one format (JPG, HEIC, PNG, etc.) to another. It also lets you change the file size (small, medium, large, or actual size) and lets you choose whether to keep the file's metadata in the converted image.

To use the Convert Image Quick Action, right-click (or Ctrl-click) an image file on your Desktop and then select Quick Actions -> Convert Image from the menu that appears. Choose the settings you need in the dialog that appears, then click Convert. Your newly converted image will appear in the same location as the original.

You’ll also see the Quick Action in the Finder preview pane when viewing images.
