How to Remove/Uninstall Applications from Your Mac
Monday, April 5, 2021
Removing programs from the Mac can be difficult. Often times third party apps for the Mac do not have a built-in uninstall utility and if they do, they can be hard to find. Mac apps that have been downloaded from the Mac App Store can simply be dragged to the trash to be removed, but many apps for the Mac are still “side loaded”, or downloaded from the internet and installed.
When removing a program from your Mac, you want to be sure that every piece of it is gone. This way you can reclaim all of the space that the app and its components are taking up, and make sure that nothing is running in the background.
Enter App Cleaner. This is a free utility that we often use to make sure that applications are completely removed from a Mac. After downloading App Cleaner from the web, you can simply drag your app into it, and it will search for all of the associated files. Once they’ve been identified they can be removed.
This can be done on older apps that don’t launch anymore, and display the prohibitory signal, or even on menu bar apps that are running in the background, like dropbox or some weather apps.
App Cleaner even has older versions for previous copies of macOS, so if you are reluctant to upgrade your system you can still use it. Enjoy using one of our secret weapons! You can download it here - https://freemacsoft.net/appcleaner/
