Clean up Suggested Email Addresses
Monday, February 15, 2021
If you use Apple Mail you may noticed that when typing an email address for a new message, a long list of email addresses appears. Some of these may be in your address book, but it’s often the case that these are people with whom you’ve only ever sent or received one message. There can even be misspelled email addresses in this list that can wreak havoc!
Apple Mail collects the names of everyone you’ve ever sent email to so you don’t have to chase down an email address for people who aren’t in your Contacts. It’s a nice feature, but may make addressing email messages a little messy after a few years. Fortunately, you can access the list directly and clean it up if need be. Here’s how:
- Open the “Mail” application.
- In the menu bar across the top of the screen, select “Window”.
- In the drop down menu, select “Previous Recipients”.
- In this list you should be able to search for the email address you’d like to remove, and click “Remove from List”.
- Once it’s been removed you can close the window, and try typing a new email. You should no longer see the address you deleted being suggested.
The previous recipients list holds all emails you’ve corresponded with in the past. It will also save mistyped email addresses and typos, so it can be worthwhile to go in there and clean up any bad entries.
